Program Description

The major goal of the UCD - Young Scholars Program is to expose and engage forty high achieving and high potential high school juniors and sophomores in a variety of research experiences within the field of the biological, agricultural, and environmental sciences. A major emphasis of the program is giving students the opportunity to gain an understanding of biological science research and its interdisciplinary impact on other fields via an in-depth research experience in state-of-the-art laboratories. Each student will undertake a six-week research project in a university laboratory under the mentorship of university research faculty. In addition, students will participate in a two-week lecture series designed to reinforce foundational biological concepts and weekend excursions to the Pacific Ocean, Lake Tahoe, and the Mount Lassen Volcanic National Park. To fully particpate in all academic and social aspects of the program and to insure adequate study time, particpants will reside on campus (including most weekends).

All students will be enrolled for five (5) units of University Group Study Credit. Assignments for the program include research notebooks, a written article of journal quality describing the research project and its conclusions, presentation of the individual project at a research symposium and presentation of research to students at the home high school. All work in the program is graded and credit will be awarded after home presentations are completed.

Cost for the six-week program the summer of 2008 is approximately $4500 which includes program costs, university credit, room, board, and all activities during the program. Funds are available to assist those students who might otherwise be unable to attend due to financial constraints. To request financial assistance, the student should submit, with their coversheet, (1) parent/guardian statement describing financial obligations and need for support and (2) a copy of the Federal tax report (Form 1040) for 2007. The amount of this additional award will be based on demonstrated need, the number of applicants who qualify and the availability of funds. Since funds are allocated at the time of application, financial requests will not be accepted following admission to the program.
